과학에서 신앙으로: 천체물리학을 공부한 내가 어떻게 그리스도인이 되었는가?

Abstract

필자는 천체물리학을 공부했고, 서울대학교 사범대학 교수가 된 후에는 천체물리학, 과학교육, 영재과학교육 등을 가르치고 그 분야에서 연구해 왔다.

우주 진화를 통해 드러나는 자연의 질서와 신비함를 공부하면서, 필자는 자연의 아름다움에 깊이 감탄하였다. 물리학의 장 이론(field theory)을 통해 성령의 역사하심을 이해하게 되었고, 로마서 1장 20절의 말씀처럼 자연 그 자체가 하나님의 활동임을 깨달으며, 창세기 1장 1절의 "태초에 하나님이 천지를 창조하시니라"는 말씀을 믿게 되었다.

이러한 과정을 통해, 우주를 창조하신 바로 그 하나님께서 또한 하나님의 형상대로 인간을 창조하시고 축복하셨다는 사실을 깨닫게 되었다. 우주에 대한 연구 결과물로서 천체물리학은 표준 빅뱅 우주론을 제시하였고, 우리는 이 이론을 통해 우리가 살고 있는 우주를 이해할 수 있게 되었다. 비록 표준 빅뱅 우주론은 창세기의 문자적 해석과는 다르지만, ‘혼돈에서 질서를 창조한다’는 의미적 해석은 동일하다고 생각한다.

이러한 이성적, 감정적, 영적 과정을 통해, 자연과학의 한 분야인 천체물리학을 공부한 필자는 그리스도인이 될 수 있었으며, 지금도 과학의 다양한 개념과 내용을 통해 하나님을 조금씩 배워가고 있다. 또한 과학교육을 연구해 온 사람으로서, 한국 교회의 교회학교에서 현재 소홀히 여겨지고 있는 ‘과학과 신앙’ 교육을 개발하고 보급하는 데에 책임감을 느끼고 있다.

From Science to Faith: How did I, who studied astrophysics, become a Christian?

Abstract

   I have studied astrophysics, and after becoming a professor at the College of Education of Seoul National University, I have taught astrophysics, science education, and science gifted education and researched in those fields.

   Studying astronomy, I was amazed by the order and mystery of nature through the evolution of the universe, and I came to feel the beauty of nature. Having understood how the Holy Spirit works through the field theory of physics and having realized that nature itself is God's activity according to Romans 1:20, I was able to believe in the words of Genesis 1:1 that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Through this process, I came to understand that the very God who created the universe, created and blessed mankind following the image of  God have studied the universe, and as a result, gave us the standard Big Bang cosmological theory in astrophysics so that we can understand the universe we live in. Although the standard Big Bang cosmological theory differs from the literal interpretation recorded in Genesis, the semantic interpretation of creating order from chaos is the same.
