Editor's Note

The inaugural issue of Prolepsis & Multicultural Education features Craig Nessan and Paul S. Chung analyzing the current outlook for public theology in the United States, with a particular focus on scholars affiliated with the Berkeley Forum Center. Ted Peters, professor emeritus at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and co-founder of the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences (CTNS), draws the concept of prolepsis into the center of Christian eschatological discourse. He connects God's creation from the future with the past and present, building a bridge between public theology and the epistemology of the natural sciences. In a stratified public sphere shaped by multicultural societies, public theology can no longer progress without addressing the achievements and issues of natural sciences and technology. Nessan and Chung expand the horizon of prolepsis by reconstructing the history and society of those marginalized in multicultural contexts, engaging in dialogue with postcolonial theory.

Ted Peters’ “2025 Update on Theology and Science” presents a concise yet significant reflection, evaluating the decades-long development of the dialogue between religion and science at CTNS from a public theology perspective, while opening up new areas of inquiry.

Paul Chung critically reevaluates the intersections of sociology, systems biology, and multicultural issues through a phenomenological lens—particularly exploring the connection between German sociologist Niklas Luhmann and neuroscientist Francisco Varela’s concept of autopoiesis. Anticipating a meeting between prolepsis and autopoiesis, Chung situates the self-producing nature of cells—the vital energy of life and networked thought—within the phenomenological concept of life's intentionality. 프로렙시스 & 다문화 교육 창간호는 크레이크 내산과 정승훈이 미국에서 공공 신학이 다루어지는 전망을 분석하고, 특히 버클리 포럼 센터에 관여하는 학자들의 입장을 소개한다. 테드 피터즈는 버클리 연합신학 대학원 명예교수와 신학과 자연과학 센터 (Center for Theology and Natural Sciences) 공동 창립자이다.  그는 프로렙시스 개념을 기독교 종말론의 중심으로 끌어들이고 미래로부터 하나님의 창조를 과거와 현재와 연결지으면서 공공신학을 자연과학의 인식론에 가교를 놓는다. 공공신학은 다문화 사회로 계층화된 공론장에서 자연과학과의 성과와 테크놀로지 문제를 다루지 않고는 더 이상 진척할 수가 없다. 크레이그 내산과 정승훈은 프로렙시스의 지평을 다문화 사회에서 밀려나간 자들의 역사와 사회를 재구성하며 포스트콜로니얼 이론과 대화를 한다.

테드 피터즈의 2025 신학과 과학의 업데이트는 지난 수십년동안 CTNS에서 발전시켜 온 종교와 과학의 만남을 공공신학의 관점에서 평가하고 새로운 영역을 개방하는 간략하지만 매우 중요한 내용을 담고있다.

정승훈은 사회학과 시스템 생물학 그리고 다문화의 문제를, 특히 독일의 사회학자 니클라스 루만과 뇌과학자 프란시스코  발레라의 오토포이에스 개념의 연관성을 현상학적인 접근을 통해 분석하고 비판적으로 갱신한다.  프로렙시스와 오토포이에시스의 만남을 예비하며 세포의 자기 생산성에서 드러나는 생의 활동력과 네트워크의 사유를 현상학의 생의 지향성 개념에 자리매김을 한다. 이 논문은 몇 차레 시리즈로 소개될 것이다.
