The inaugural issue of Comparative Religion and Multicultural Literature Journal is accessible via the link above. This issue explores the concept of recognition, a core theme in both comparative religion and social philosophy. Axel Honneth developed the idea of recognition—originally central to Hegel’s philosophy—within a sociological framework, particularly in relation to Émile Durkheim. Today, the concept of recognition spans a wide spectrum across theology and sociology.

Professor Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen of Fuller Theological Seminary carefully engages with the recognition model to facilitate peaceful encounters between Christianity and Islam—one of today’s most pressing interfaith challenges—thus opening a new dimension of comparative public theology.

Professor Brian Mok, based at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, expands the recognition model from a cultural perspective, rooted in his experience and practice within the church context. He raises critical questions: Who is the subject of recognition, and who is the object? In discussions surrounding recognition, mutual recognition should not be confused with a privileged party simply adopting a benevolent attitude—it requires something deeper and more reciprocal.

Paul S. Chung, Director of the Berkeley Forum Center and Distinguished Professor, reconstructs the recognition model within a comparative framework oriented toward public theology, drawing from Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s ethics of reconciliation. In his unfinished work Ethics, Bonhoeffer left a significant critique of modernity—analyzing poverty, antisemitism, and the Janus-faced nature of modern society. Chung explores these unfinished reflections by engaging recognition theory in the context of Christian-Muslim encounters, seeking multidimensional and alternative pathways toward understanding modernity. This approach to public theology not only contributes to sociological analysis of modernity but also opens a new, constructive horizon for postcolonial critique.

정승훈은 버클리 포럼 센터 원장이며 석학교수로서 인정 모델을 공공 신학을 지향하는 비교 문제틀을 디트리히 본회퍼의 화해의 윤리에서 재구성한다. 본회퍼는 그가 남겨놓은 단편 <윤리> 에서 근대성의 현상을 가난한 계층, 반유대주의 그리고 근대성의 야누스적인 얼굴에 대한 중요한 분석을 남겨놓았다. 정승훈은 본회퍼가 남겨놓은 미완의 근대성에 대한 비판적 성찰을 이슬람과의 만남을 통해 인정모델과 근대성에 이르는 다차적이며 대안적 길들을 탐구한다. 이러한 공공신학적 분석은 근대성에 대한 사회학적 분석과 더불어 포스트콜로니얼 비평의 새로운 구성적인 지평을 개방한다.
